Project Scope

Mawael Environmental Consultancy supported the assessment and update of Egypt’s National Action Plan for the Conservation of Marine Mammals in the Egyptian Mediterranean Waters in collaboration with SPA/RAC and ACCOBAMS. The assignment evaluated implementation of the 2012 National Action Plan, reviewed the conservation status of marine mammals including dolphins, whales, porpoises, and the endangered Mediterranean monk seal, and assessed existing threats, institutional arrangements, monitoring systems, and ongoing conservation initiatives. The work included stakeholder consultations with governmental authorities, research institutions, fisheries representatives, NGOs, and maritime organizations to identify priorities for future conservation actions. The updated Action Plan was aligned with ACCOBAMS, the Barcelona Convention, SAPBIO, IMAP indicators, the Mediterranean Cetacean Action Plan, the Regional Strategy for Monk Seal Conservation, and Egypt’s National Biodiversity Strategy and Action Plan (NBSAP), strengthening national marine biodiversity conservation and long-term management.
