Project Overview

Development of a regional Nature-Based Solutions framework supporting climate resilience, biodiversity conservation, ecosystem restoration, and sustainable development across the Arab region.

Mawael Environmental Consultancy, in collaboration with CEDARE, developed a comprehensive regional framework on Nature-Based Solutions (NbS) to strengthen climate resilience and sustainable development across the Arab region. The study examined regional environmental challenges including climate change, biodiversity loss, water scarcity, land degradation, coastal vulnerability, and socio-economic pressures while identifying opportunities to mainstream NbS into national and regional development agendas. The framework evaluated ecosystem restoration, blue carbon ecosystems, sustainable land management, watershed restoration, urban green infrastructure, coastal protection, and community-based adaptation approaches. Institutional arrangements, governance structures, financing mechanisms, and policy frameworks were also assessed to support large-scale implementation of Nature-Based Solutions throughout the region. The resulting framework provides strategic guidance for governments, regional organizations, and development partners to integrate ecosystem-based approaches into climate adaptation, mitigation, biodiversity conservation, and sustainable development planning.
