Development of a Management Plan for the Coastal and Marine Protected Area of Ashtoum El Gamil
Development of an integrated management plan for Ashtoum El Gamil Protected Area, supporting ecosystem-based management, biodiversity conservation, sustainable resource use, and participatory governance.

Project Scope
Mawael Environmental Consultancy developed a comprehensive Management Plan for the Coastal and Marine Protected Area of Ashtoum El Gamil under the UNEP/MAP-SPA/RAC SEMPA Programme funded by the European Union. Building upon previous ecological and socio-economic assessments, the assignment established a long-term management framework integrating biodiversity conservation, ecosystem-based management, governance, and sustainable resource use. The work included reviewing existing environmental information, evaluating ecological and socio-economic conditions, identifying conservation priorities, defining management objectives and zoning schemes, and developing monitoring, implementation, and adaptive management frameworks. Particular emphasis was placed on stakeholder engagement, participatory governance, fisheries management, habitat conservation, environmental awareness, and strengthening institutional capacity to support the long-term protection and sustainable management of one of Egypt’s most significant Mediterranean coastal and marine protected areas.
