Project Scope

Mawael Environmental Consultancy supported the development of Egypt’s Post-2020 National Strategy for Marine and Coastal Protected Areas (MCPAs) and Other Effective Area-Based Conservation Measures (OECMs) along the Mediterranean coast. The assignment was delivered in two phases, beginning with a comprehensive diagnosis of ecological, social, economic, institutional, and governance conditions, followed by the preparation of a national strategy defining objectives, policies, implementation measures, and management priorities. The study evaluated climate change impacts, tourism, fisheries, coastal development pressures, institutional capacity, stakeholder engagement, and biodiversity conservation needs. The strategy provides a practical framework for expanding and strengthening Egypt’s protected area network while aligning national conservation priorities with international biodiversity commitments and sustainable development objectives.
