Biodiversity and Coastal Ecosystems Assessment for the Climate-Resilient ICZM Plan of Egypt’s North Coast
Biodiversity and coastal ecosystem assessment supporting the development of a climate-resilient Integrated Coastal Zone Management (ICZM) Plan for Egypt's North Coast.

Project Scope
Mawael Environmental Consultancy provided biodiversity and coastal ecosystem expertise to support the development of a climate-resilient Integrated Coastal Zone Management (ICZM) Plan for Egypt’s North Coast under the Enhancing Climate Change Adaptation in the North Coast and Nile Delta Regions in Egypt (ECCADP) project. Implemented by the Ministry of Water Resources and Irrigation with support from the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and the Green Climate Fund (GCF), the assignment evaluated the impacts of climate change and coastal protection measures on biodiversity, marine habitats, and coastal ecosystems. The study assessed current and future biodiversity risks associated with sea level rise, coastal erosion, flooding, saltwater intrusion, and habitat degradation, while examining their environmental and socio-economic implications. The findings supported the integration of biodiversity conservation, ecosystem-based adaptation, and climate resilience into long-term coastal planning and decision-making, contributing to sustainable management of Egypt’s Mediterranean coastline.
