Sustainable Fishery Development in the Red Sea and Gulf of Aden (SFISH) – Development of PERSGA’s Environmental and Social Safeguards
Development of environmental and social safeguard standards and institutional capacity to support sustainable fisheries management across the Red Sea and Gulf of Aden.

Project Scope
Mawael Environmental Consultancy supported PERSGA in developing a comprehensive Environmental and Social Safeguards System for the Sustainable Fishery Development (SFISH) Programme across the Red Sea and Gulf of Aden. The assignment established policies, procedures, screening tools, and implementation mechanisms to ensure that environmental and social considerations are systematically integrated into fisheries management and regional development initiatives. In addition to preparing the safeguard framework, the project included the design and delivery of specialized capacity-building and training programmes for PERSGA and SFISH staff, enabling institutions to effectively implement safeguard requirements, monitor compliance, and manage environmental and social risks. The assignment strengthened institutional governance, stakeholder engagement, environmental accountability, and long-term sustainability, providing PERSGA with a practical safeguard system aligned with international best practices for regional marine and fisheries programmes.
